Name
Wendy Sanders

Job Title/Department

Math Adjunct

What kind of pet do you have (dog, cat, bird, etc)?  dog

What is your pet’s name?  Terra

How did you come up with this name?  My girls were given the opportunity to name her once they met her. (they didn’t know we were getting a dog) They sat down in the living room debating name after name. I vetoed a few, and we all finally settled on Terra.

How old is your pet?  7

What is your pet’s gender?  Female

Describe your pet in three words:  Shy, princess, protective

What is the thing your pet cannot live without?  Blankets to lie on and in. Or, a sunbeam to sleep in.

Can your pet do tricks? If so, what?  Not really. She can sit and heel, and that is about it. She is good with walking off leash and staying with us.

What is the best trick your pet has taught you?  Letting her out when it is time for her to go out.

Do you have a nickname for your pet?  Grandma, Terra Watt

You know your pet is in a good mood when he/she does this:  When she wags her tail, or brings a toy to play tug with.

Your pet’s favorite spot to hangout is:  The warmest sunbeam she can reach

Favorite toy:  Her red dragon. It is great for tug, in her opinion.

One habit you would love to change:  Her incessant need to lick all fabrics.

Does your pet prefer to play with people, or other animals?  People

Does your pet like children?  Yes

If you could ask your pet one question and they’d be able to answer it, what would it be?  Do you like the cats? You are sending mixed messages. And, why can’t you go down the stairs when the cats are lying on them? The stairs are big enough for all of you.

Can your pet read your emotions?  Yes. She does comfort me when I am upset.

Funniest moment you’ve had with your pet:  We will occasionally hear whining. When we look, we will find Terra at the top or bottom of the stairs looking longingly up or down the stairs at the cat that is “blocking” her access to the other floor. This happens with incredible regularity.

What is the most rewarding aspect of owning your pet?  The cuddles that she endlessly gives.

Additional Comments:  When we got her, at about 11 weeks old, I always said that when she outgrew her puppy stage, she would never move. She never really had a true puppy stage. She went from birth to grandma.

Meet Leo

Name

Laura Bauer

Job Title/Department

Assistant Director, Leadership Learning & Development

What kind of pet do you have (dog, cat, bird, etc)?

Cat

What is your pet’s name?

Leo

How did you come up with this name?

My sister in law is a veterinarian and fostered Leo until we were ready to adopt him. Her son (my nephew) Owen came up with his name. When we decided to adopt him, we thought about giving him a new name, but Leo just fits!

How old is your pet?

6 (ish) months, we think

What is your pet’s gender?

  • Male

Describe your pet in three words:

Crazy, funny, adorable

What is the thing your pet cannot live without?

Leo loves his cardboard scratching board. He uses it every day!

Can your pet do tricks? If so, what?

He loves chasing strings, and if you swing it up in the air, Leo will jump and do an acrobatic flip to try to catch it. It’s impressive.

When Leo is happy, he will purr SO LOUDLY. I’ve never heard a cat purr so loud!

Leo

Your pet’s favorite spot to hangout is:

He spends a lot of time in my daughter’s room (to keep him away from our other cat who is not a fan of Leo yet) and he loves sitting on the windowsill looking at all the birds flying around outside. He has a great view of our backyard.

Favorite toy:

He has a stuffed unicorn from Target that he loves to carry around and play with.

Biting! Leo loves to bite and play, but sometimes the biting is a bit too hard. He also loves to attack your legs/feet when you’re walking past him.

Does your pet prefer to play with people, or other animals?

Does your pet like children?

  • Yes

Can your pet read your emotions?

Not sure yet with this guy – we are still getting to know him!

Funniest moment you’ve had with your pet:

Leo is a very playful and energetic kitten, so he does silly and funny things on a daily basis. As bad as it sounds, it is pretty funny watching him interact with our older cat Chloe. He will circle around her and try to play with her tail, which Chloe is NOT happy about. Chloe will swat at him, hiss and growl…but Leo is persistent and keeps trying. We try to keep them apart as much as possible right now, but when they do see each other, it is pretty entertaining!

What is the most rewarding aspect of owning your pet?

After having only one cat who is older for so many years, we are reminded of how fun kittens are. He definitely keeps things lively at our house!

  • Male

What is the best trick your pets taught you?

Patience. When we got them, they were in a shelter. They had been found on the street, and we adopted them together. We got Simon a red collar and Sebastien a blue, and that is all we could use to tell them apart at first. Now, Sebastien is getting to be very plump (maybe we should have gone with Garfunkel. Then we could call him Garfield) and their cat-sonalities are becoming very different.

Can your pets read your emotions?

If so, they rarely deign to respond to them. But, my daughter’s, yes, I think that they do.

Funniest moment you’ve had with your pets:

We have one wand toy with feathers that Simon, in particular, loves to play with. The funny part is when he gets his teeth into the end, and turns off to walk away dragging the wand between his feet, under his belly. He goes down the hall a short ways, then stops to look back to ensure he is being followed.

Meet Sam and Bodhi

When Sam and Bodhi disappear in the woods, the only way to get them back is to yell “COOKIES” or “BISCUITS!”

Your name:       Kristen Haase

Job title/department:     Adjunct, History and Global Studies

What kind of pet do you have (dog, cat, bird, etc.)?      dogs (whippets)

What is your pet’s name?     Sam and Bodhi

How did you come up with this name?    Sam was rescued from a hoarder, and was given this name by his rescuers, so I kept it. Bodhi is a Buddhist term for enlightenment.

How old is your pet?    Sam is 3, Bodhi is 11 months old.

What is your pet’s gender?   Males

Describe your pet in three words:    Fast. Very fast!

What is the thing your pet cannot live without?     Their daily sunrise, off-leash run through the 100 acre wooded park near my house, or at Charlie Rinehimer’s farm!

Can your pet do tricks? If so, what?     Whippets aren’t big on tricks, unless making an entire wicker laundry basket turn into a pile of small sticks in one hour counts as a trick (Bodhi is still in his ‘chewing’ and destructive stage!)

What is the best trick your pet has taught you?      How to move me out of ‘his’ spot on the sofa by either staring me down and whining, or by distracting me by pretending he has to go outside (in the latter case, as soon as I get off of the sofa to open the door, he runs over to where I was sitting and takes my spot). I fall for it every time.

Do you have a nickname for your pet?   ‘Cookies or Biscuits’. When they disappear into the woods, they don’t return when I call their names, but if I yell ‘cookies’, they come bounding out from nowhere!

Sam and Bodhi, Kristen Haase

Does your pet prefer to play with people, or other animals?    Sam loves other dogs, and Bodhi loves to taunt the cat. Both are total human love-sponges.

Does your pet like children?   Yes

Kristen Haase’s pups, Sam and Bodhi, are total human love-sponges!

If you could ask your pet one question and they’d be able to answer it, what would it be?    Why wicker, Bodhi, and, why can’t you eat my many pairs of cheap shoes instead of going after my Uggs, Birks, and Docs?

Can your pet read your emotions?     Yes.

Funniest moment you’ve had with your pet:     I put my son’s Christmas presents under the tree after he went to bed, and Bodhi saw this display of wrapped things under a tree as a great challenge to see how many he could unwrap and tear apart and how quickly he could pull presents out of gift bags. It was frustrating to re-wrap all of those presents at the time, but it was really funny!!

What is the most rewarding aspect of owning your pet?   The unconditional love, and constant, cheery companionship. Such sweet souls!

Meet Napoleon and the Chickens

Napoleon is very protective of his “ladies!”

Your name:       Megan Geklinsky

Job title/department:     Admissions

What kind of pet do you have (dog, cat, bird, etc.)?       Chickens!

What is your pet’s name?     Napoleon (But also kind of featuring all the chickens!)

How did you come up with this name?    He’s a tiny French Bantam, but he doesn’t let his size get in the way! He puffs his little chest up and crows as proudly as can be. He is definitely the King of the Coop! With his Napoleon complex and French heritage, his name seemed perfect.

How old is your pet?  2

What is your pet’s gender?   Male

Describe your pet in three words:    Proud, Protective, Beautiful

Megan Geklinsky’s proud Napoleon!

What is the thing your pet cannot live without?     His coop full of hens!

Can your pet do tricks? If so, what?     We’re not so great with the tricks…yet! I do have a food ball for the chickens. I fill the ball with food and as they roll it around, food comes out. It almost seems like the chickens play soccer with each other while trying to get treats. I also built a swing for them, but all of the chickens seem more frightened of it rather than willing to swing. We’re getting there, though! I hope to have them jumping through hoops this summer!

What is the best trick your pet has taught you?      Napoleon, and all my chickens, have taught me how to be patient and responsible and hardworking. While owning chickens isn’t terribly difficult, it does take effort to care for them. When we’ve had inclement weather threats, I would have to gather the chickens to make sure they got into the coop. That takes a lot of patience! I also have to wake up early to make sure they are fed, have water, and collect their eggs. And every 2-3 weeks or so, a full cleaning of the coop is necessary. It’s a dirty job, but it’s rewarding. Plus the gift of fresh eggs everyday is worth it!

Do you have a nickname for your pet?   Nap

You know your pet is in a good mood when he/she does this:   Cock-a-doodle-do!!! There are mornings where I am up before the sun…and the chickens. So when I’m out tending to them, I say good morning and crow at Napoleon…and he crows right back to me! I like to think he is also saying “Good Morning.” All the chickens know when it’s feeding time and pretty much flock to me when I am carrying the giant feeder.

Your pet’s favorite spot to hangout is:   Inside the coop. He seems very protective of his ladies, so he is usually the last one out of the coop and watches over the ladies while they lay eggs. He is also the first one back in the coop in the evenings and is the first to get inside at the sight of wet/snowy weather.

Favorite toy:   His perch inside the coop.

One habit you would like to change:    I love all his habits. While he is a rooster, he’s so small that his crow is not bothersome at all. I encourage him to crow more because it makes me smile.

Does your pet prefer to play with people, or other animals?    Nap prefers his chicken gang. Every once in awhile he does allow me to hold him.

Does your pet like children?   Yes

If you could ask your pet one question and they’d be able to answer it, what would it be?    How does it feel to be king?!

Can your pet read your emotions?     I don’t think so. But I can definitely tell when my chickens are cranky. Or hungry. Or both. (Ha!)

Funniest moment you’ve had with your pet:     As I mentioned, Napoleon is a French Bantam. We also have a small British Sebright Bantam. We call her Mrs. Napoleon. (Yes, it should be Mrs. Bonaparte, but Mrs. Napoleon just sounded hilariously ridiculous.)
We like to think they are a cute little chicken couple. We often see them drinking side-by-side, or having a quick bite together.

What is the most rewarding aspect of owning your pet?   Having livestock has helped me grow in a way I never knew. I’ve always been “city” girl. Making the move to the Poconos was a big change, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. We are hoping to expand our little homestead with more livestock, create a bigger garden, and learn to be more self-sustaining. We started with 10 little chickies and now have a full coop of about 20. Chickens are such quirky little creatures and I love having them in my life.

Additional comments:    We have a small side business called “Meggie’s Eggies.” I can deliver eggs to campus or customers can pick up at our home in the Poconos!

Your name:       Rebecca Walz

Job title/department:     Adjunct Instructor – Business and Technology

What kind of pet do you have (dog, cat, bird, etc.)?       Cat

What is your pet’s name?     Phoenix

How did you come up with this name?    For my son Jackson’s 8th birthday we decided to adopt a new kitty. Jackson had the named picked out before we even got to the SPCA. Once there, he was immediately drawn to a black and white kitty that was in a cage by herself. When we asked a bit more about the kitty, the employee told us it was a 3-month old female. Jackson whispered in my ear, “Can Phoenix be a girl’s name?” And I said, “Of course!” The rest is history.

How old is your pet?  8

What is your pet’s gender?   Female

Describe your pet in three words:    Playful, sweet, spoiled

NCC’s 100th Pet of the Week, Phoenix!

What is the thing your pet cannot live without?   A human lap to sit on – preferably with jeans.

Can your pet do tricks? If so, what?     She can play fetch, climb Christmas trees, and regularly tries to drown her toys in her water bowl.

Your pet’s favorite spot to hangout is:   In the sun.

Favorite toy:
Pipe-cleaner (I’m not even sure how we got that…but she loves it!)

Does your pet prefer to play with people, or other animals?    People

Does your pet like children?   Yes

Meet Ruby

When Ruby is happy, she makes quiet mewing sounds.

Your name:       Karen Klein

Job title/department:     Professor of Biology

What kind of pet do you have (dog, cat, bird, etc.)?       Eclectus (a type of parrot)

What is your pet’s name?     Ruby

How did you come up with this name?    It’s a bit of a slam-dunk–her beautiful colors beg for nothing less!

Professor Karen Klein’s pet parrot Ruby.

How old is your pet?  unknown

What is your pet’s gender?   Female

Describe your pet in three words:    Feisty, complex, grand

What is the thing your pet cannot live without?     She loves her hide-away box!

Can your pet do tricks? If so, what?     She “dances”–bobs and sways with music when it plays

What is the best trick your pet has taught you?      Not so much “tricks”, but–she keeps my reflexes sharp (to avoid a nasty bite!), as well as increased patience and understanding

You know your pet is in a good mood when he/she does this:   She has quite a repertoire of vocalizations, but I’ve noticed when she is happy, she makes quiet mewing sounds

Your pet’s favorite spot to hangout is:   Ruby loves to hang out on her perches and on top of her enclosure

Ruby, Karen Klein
Ruby, Karen Klein’s parrot.

Favorite toy:   She has many enrichment toys–she doesn’t have a favorite, however!

One habit you would like to change:    She spontaneously screams ear-piercingly loud, a volume that leaves ones ears to ring!

Does your pet prefer to play with people, or other animals?    She is quite a loner–so neither!

Does your pet like children?   No

If you could ask your pet one question and they’d be able to answer it, what would it be?    Is there anything I could do to make you trust that I won’t hurt you? (See additional comments below)

Can your pet read your emotions?     Oh, absolutely–she is extremely intuitive and intelligent!

What is the most rewarding aspect of owning your pet?   Since she was rescued from a horrible situation, I feel like I am giving her a second chance at life! Their intelligence (Eclectuses/large parrots) makes them emotionally complex, and I am doing my best to undue the psychological damage that has been done to her by her previous owner.

Additional comments: Previously to my acquiring her, Ruby was kept in a locked basement utility closet where she languished, neglected for years. I’ve had her for 6 months in a gentle, loving, peaceful environment, and she has made some progress, but she is still extremely fearful and mistrusting of people. The species is known to be gentle, placid, and affectionate, but my goal is not to “cuddle” with her, just to be able to approach her without her being so fearful, and to not be on the receiving end of a nasty bite!

If you want to see YOUR pet in the spotlight, fill out the form and be sure to send a photo or two!

Meet Callie

When you call “where’s Callie,” she will come running from wherever she is!

Your name:       Amber Hess

Job title/department:     Security Dispatcher/Public Safety

What kind of pet do you have (dog, cat, bird, etc.)?       Cat

What is your pet’s name?     Callie

How did you come up with this name?    I did not choose Callie’s name. This was already her name when I adopted her from Itty Bitty Kitty Shelter in Macungie, PA.

How old is your pet?  5 Years Old

What is your pet’s gender?   Female

Describe your pet in three words:    Shy, Gentle, Loving

What is the thing your pet cannot live without?     Her catnip bumblebee, unicorn and brush!

Can your pet do tricks? If so, what?     Callie does not have a specific trick per-say; however, when you call out “where’s Callie?” she will come running to you from wherever she is.

Amber Hess’ cute kitty Callie!

What is the best trick your pet has taught you?      Patience and Persistence! For the first year of her life Callie was a stray in Long Island, New York. The individual feeding her colony found her injured one day before a big snow storm. After a life-saving surgery, Callie was moved to Itty Bitty Kitty. Callie lived at the shelter for 2 years before I found her. Callie is a very shy cat which resulted in her being placed in the “shy room’ at the shelter which is often over looked by visitors looking to adopt. For the first 3 months of Callie being home, she lived under my dresser and then my bed. We would read her books, sing her songs, play the radio for her, and give her plenty of toys to gain her trust. After almost a year, Callie is sleeping in my bed with me, running all around the house, playing with all of her toys, watches the fish swim in their tank, and the creatures outside her window.

Do you have a nickname for your pet?   Monkey, Cuddle Bug, Lovey

You know your pet is in a good mood when he/she does this:   Rubs up on my legs, head butts me, purrs super loud, and has a case of the zoomies! She also rolls all around the bed when she is being brushed!

Your pet’s favorite spot to hangout is:   On her cat tree in front of the window in my bedroom! She spends hours watching the birds, deer, bunnies, and squirrels.

Favorite toy:   Her catnip bumblebee, banana, and unicorn are all tied for first.

One habit you would like to change:    Nothing! She is perfect just the way she is.

Does your pet prefer to play with people, or other animals?    People, once she trusts you!

If you could ask your pet one question and they’d be able to answer it, what would it be?    How did you survive the crazy streets of Long Island, New York for the first year of your life?

Can your pet read your emotions?     Absolutely! When you adopt a shy cat, you learn everything about their personality. It is arguably a stronger bond than adopting an outgoing animal because you have to grow together and earn each other’s trust. Shy cats will often attach to one person and it is usually the one that spends the most time with them. It is a very rewarding feeling when your shy baby goes through each step of the trust process and eventually goes from sleeping under a dresser to in your arms.

Funniest moment you’ve had with your pet:     When Callie snores! Sometimes she sticks her tongue out while she is snoring and it is both adorable and funny at the same time.

What is the most rewarding aspect of owning your pet?   Earning her complete trust! She follows me everywhere and snuggles right into my arms.

Additional comments:     Do not overlook the shy babies, their love is a special kind of love! They are a lot of work at first and it may get discouraging at times; however, it will be so much more rewarding in the end!

Callie Amber Hess
Callie, Amber Hess’ very special kitty!

If you could ask your pet one question and they’d be able to answer it, what would it be?    How come you only talk when no one is in the room?

Can your pet read your emotions?     Yes – especially when I am annoyed with him!

Funniest moment you’ve had with your pet:     When we had a power outage one night, he kept looking from the TV to me as if to ask why it wasn’t going on!

What is the most rewarding aspect of owning your pet?   His intelligence is amazing considering the size of the brain. Reminds me to respect all animals outside regardless of size.

Additional comments:    Parrots can be loving, but also destructive because of their intelligence. If you must leave them for hours at a time, leave the TV on or have a dog in the house.
