On Friday, March 11, 2022, Northampton Community College (NCC) hosted the 51st annual American Welding Society (AWS) Lehigh Valley welding competition at Hartzell Hall on Bethlehem campus. Seven area vocational-technical schools competed, including Bethlehem Area Vocational Technical School, Carbon County Vocational Technical School, Career Technology Center of Lackawanna, Lehigh Career and Technical School, Middle Bucks Institute of Technology, Monroe Career and Technical School, and Warren County Vocational Technical School.
Prizes were awarded to the top five competitors at the awards banquet on March 29. The first-place winner, Paul Richards from Lackawanna, received a $1,000 scholarship from NCC and a new welding machine. Lackawanna’s Charlie Shaffer, who came in second place, received a $1,000 AWS Section Scholarship among other prizes. Third through fifth place winners, Ty Graver (Carbon), Ryan Hartmaier (Lehigh) and Seth Johnson (Monroe), received Cabela’s gift cards and auto-darkening welding helmets. Richards also took home an Oxy-fuel cutting outfit as the winner of the Oxy-fuel cutting contest, which requires the competitors to cut out the PA State Keystone symbol.
NCC congratulates all of the talented competitors and winners this year and is grateful for their continued partnership with the American Welding Society.
