As a part of the new Southside Urban Arts Trail, a digital guide and map to all Southside public art, a community piano was installed outside of the Northampton Community College (NCC) Fowler Family Southside Center. On November 6, a ribbon cutting was held at the location of the new piano, at the corner of 3rd Street and Fillmore Streets.

NCC was one of the community partners who made this project possible. Staff from NCC’s Community Education programs and the FabLab were invited to choose a design for the piano.

“The essence of NCC’s Fowler Family Southside Center is that it serves as a comprehensive and holistic resource to the South Bethlehem community. Housing NCC’s community education, entrepreneurial, and workforce development programs, the installation of a community piano amplifies the importance of including the arts in that mix of services we offer. NCC’s Fowler Center is so pleased to have this piece of artwork situated outside our building for students, faculty, staff, and community members alike to enjoy,” says Associate Dean of Community Education at NCC Audree Chase.

Visitors can follow the new trail on their phones and walk the path learning about each mural, artistic bike rack, sculpture, mosaic and now the brand-new public piano, which anyone can sit down to play. The Southside Arts District, an initiative of the Bethlehem Economic Development Corporation, is committed to improving the economic conditions of the core business district of South Bethlehem; specifically, through art. For more information, visit www.southsideartsdistrict.com.
