Visitors are welcome to stop by the East 40 Community Garden (due east, across parking lot B) to see fine arts adjunct professor and artist Cindy Vojnovic ‘in action.’

Vojnovic’s Artist-in-Residency is focusing on the ancient technologies of creating dyes and pigments from natural materials. She is typically on-site from 10 a.m.-noon on Mondays-Thursdays, and from noon – 3 pm on Fridays (through Tuesday, Aug. 9), when you can see her crushing rocks or extracting dyes from native plants.

Having pulverized the rocks – sourced from the roof of the College Center by way of the East 40 grounds – she uses a simple mortar and pestle to grind the bits into a fine powder, which she combines with a binder to create pastels, watercolors and oils. Surprisingly, the gray rocks often produce soft colors such as olive green or pinkish-rust tones.

The local plants she uses, with unfamiliar-to-most-of-us names like woad, weld, and madder, also yield surprising colors from their roots, flowers and leaves. For example, the green leaves of the woad plant produce a blue tone, and madder roots turn into a warm, dark red.

“This is a slow process, with a lot of steps,” says Vojnovic. So visitors will likely only see a portion of the activities needed to produce a final product. “I like that it takes patience – it’s my antidote to the ‘fast fashion’ of our world.”

She will be offering two community education programs in the fall, to learn more about these processes. Watch the East 40 Instagram account (@ncceast40) and website ( for details.
